Lymphedema of the extremities

Restoring Function. Rebuilding Confidence. Improving Quality of Life.

With nearly 30 years of experience, Matt Ban provides highly specialized occupational therapy services for individuals navigating complex medical conditions affecting the face, head, neck, lymphatic system, and nervous system.

Healing is possible. Progress is measurable. Quality of life can be restored.

Evidence-based Treatment

Lymphedema of the body and extremities is a chronic condition caused by impairment of the lymphatic system, leading to the accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the tissues. This often results in persistent swelling, heaviness, discomfort, skin changes, and reduced mobility in the arms, legs, trunk, or other areas of the body.

Lymphedema may occur as primary lymphedema, a congenital condition where individuals are born with fewer or underdeveloped lymphatic vessels, or as secondary lymphedema, which can develop following cancer treatment, surgery, radiation therapy, trauma, infection, or chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). Without appropriate management, swelling may progress and significantly impact physical function and overall quality of life.

Clinical research has consistently shown that specialized lymphatic therapy can effectively manage symptoms, reduce swelling, protect tissue health, and support long-term functional independence.

As an Occupational Therapist trained in advanced lymphatic rehabilitation, treatment is grounded in Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), the internationally recognized gold standard for lymphedema care. This comprehensive treatment approach may include:

• Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) to stimulate lymphatic circulation and reduce fluid buildup
• Compression therapy using bandaging or specialized garments to maintain fluid reduction
• Therapeutic exercise to activate the body’s natural lymphatic pump
• Skin care education to prevent infection and tissue complications
• Functional rehabilitation to support safe movement and daily activities
• Long-term self-management strategies to maintain results and prevent progression

Although lymphedema is not curable, it is highly manageable when treated by a trained specialist. Early intervention is particularly important, as treatment can slow or prevent disease progression and significantly improve comfort, mobility, and daily participation.

At Free to Be You, therapy focuses not only on reducing swelling but on restoring function and empowering individuals with the knowledge and tools needed to live well with lymphedema. Each treatment plan is individualized to the patient’s diagnosis, lifestyle, and personal goals, helping them return to meaningful activity with confidence and support.
