About Us

Matthew J. Ban, OTRL, CLT-LANA - Founder of Free to be you facial, Lymphatics & Counseling, PLLC.

Free to Be You was created from a simple but powerful belief: healing is not just about reducing symptoms — it’s about helping people reconnect with who they are and how they want to live their lives.

After nearly 30 years as an Occupational Therapist, including more than a decade working within the interdisciplinary teams at Michigan Medicine, I saw firsthand how medical care can save lives — but rehabilitation is what helps people truly return to living. I had the privilege of working alongside surgeons, oncologists, neurologists, and trauma teams helping individuals recover from complex conditions affecting the brain, face, lymphatic system, and body.

What I witnessed over those years shaped the heart of Free to Be You.

Many people navigating conditions such as facial nerve injury, head and neck cancer, or lymphatic disorders often feel something deeper than physical symptoms. They may feel disconnected from their identity, uncertain about how to participate in daily life, or unsure how to regain confidence in their bodies.

That’s where occupational therapy becomes transformative.

Free to Be You was founded to provide highly specialized care in Facial Reanimation Therapy, Head and Neck Lymphedema, and Whole-Body Lymphatic Disorders, while addressing the broader human experience of healing. Our work is grounded in evidence-based occupational therapy, but our purpose goes beyond clinical treatment. We help individuals restore meaningful participation in their lives.

Our mission is to facilitate deep, client-centered healing and functional restoration by addressing the physical, cognitive, emotional, and environmental barriers that limit engagement in everyday life. Through collaborative goal setting and holistic care, we support people in reclaiming meaningful occupations, rebuilding confidence, strengthening adaptive skills, and re-engaging in the roles that give their lives purpose.

The vision behind Free to Be You is simple and profound: a world where individuals experience integrated health and live with a strong sense of identity across all areas of life. We believe people deserve the opportunity to achieve wholeness — physically, cognitively, emotionally, socially, and spiritually — so they can fully participate in the activities and relationships that matter most.

When healing happens, it reaches far beyond the clinic. It shows up in conversations, in work, in family life, and in the quiet moments where someone begins to feel like themselves again.

At Free to Be You, our goal is to support that journey.

To help people restore function.
To help them reclaim meaning.
And ultimately, to help them live with autonomy, resilience, and purpose.

To be whole.
To be free.
To be fully alive.
